A fistula is an abnormal tunnel-like connection between two body parts that don’t usually connect. In the anal region, it’s called an anal fistula, which is the most common type. 🔹 Causes Usually develops after an anal abscess (pus collection near the anus) that doesn’t heal properly. Chronic infection or inflammation. Conditions like Crohn’s disease, tuberculosis, or trauma (less common). 🔹 Symptoms Constant or recurrent pus or blood discharge near the anus. Pain or swelling around the anus. Irritation, itching, or foul-smelling discharge. Recurrent fever (if infection is present). 🔹 Treatment Fistula rarely heals on its own, so medical treatment is needed: Surgery (most common and effective): Fistulotomy – cutting open the tract so it heals from inside out. Seton placement – a surgical thread left in the fistula to help it drain and heal. LIFT procedure – ligation of fistula tract. Laser surgery – minimally invasive, faster recovery. Medicines: Antibiotics (for infection). Pain relievers. Not a cure, but help with symptoms. Lifestyle & Home Care: Sitz bath (warm water sitting bath) for pain relief. Maintain anal hygiene. High-fiber diet & plenty of fluids to avoid constipation. 👉 Important: Fistula usually does not heal permanently with only medicines. Surgery is the definitive treatment.
