Piles (also called hemorrhoids) are swollen and inflamed veins in the rectum or anus. They are similar to varicose veins but occur in the anal region. Types of Piles: Internal piles – inside the rectum (usually painless but may bleed). External piles – under the skin around the anus (can cause pain, swelling, itching). Causes: Chronic constipation or straining during bowel movements Sitting for long periods, especially on the toilet Low-fiber diet Pregnancy (due to pressure on pelvic veins) Obesity and lack of exercise Symptoms: Bleeding during bowel movements (bright red blood) Itching or irritation around the anus Swelling or lump near the anus Pain or discomfort, especially when sitting
