Panchakarma (often spelled Panchkarma) is an ancient Ayurvedic therapy that literally means “five actions” (Pancha = five, Karma = actions). It is a deep detoxification and rejuvenation system described in the Ayurvedic texts for cleansing the body of accumulated toxins (Ama) and balancing the doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha). The Five Main Procedures of Panchakarma Vamana (Therapeutic Emesis) Induced vomiting to eliminate toxins from the upper gastrointestinal tract and respiratory system. Mainly used for Kapha-related disorders (e.g., asthma, chronic cold, obesity). Virechana (Purgation Therapy) Cleansing the intestines through controlled purgation. Useful for Pitta-related disorders (e.g., skin diseases, liver problems, acidity). Basti (Medicated Enema) Administration of medicated oils/decoctions into the rectum. Considered the most important therapy for Vata-related issues (e.g., arthritis, constipation, neurological problems). Raktamokshana (Bloodletting Therapy) Controlled removal of small quantities of blood to detoxify. Beneficial in certain skin diseases, gout, or blood-related disorders. Pre- and Post-Procedures Purva Karma (Preparatory): Includes Snehana (oleation with medicated oils/ghee) and Swedana (therapeutic sweating) to loosen toxins.
